Brugge Boat Race

On the weekend of 29th February and 1st March, over 30 Otters travelled to Belgium to compete in the 26th Annual Brugge Boat Race. This is an international head race with rowers coming from a number of European countries including, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Italy. It’s the second time the Otters have descended upon Brugge for this fantastic event.

On Day 1 (Saturday), the weather was not kind and after our crews started rowing the long 5k to the start the race was called off. In true Otter style, we had a few beers at the clubhouse and then proceeded on to a great dinner in the Old Town centre.

Happily the races did go ahead on the Sunday, albeit on a very tight schedule. And, guess what, despite the delicious Belgian beers the night before, the Otters had great success. The Senior Men’s Eight defeated Germany and France to take the silver medal in the big eights. We also had our coxless fours take gold and silver in their category! Despite therough start, it was the best performance for the Otters at an international head race ever! A huge well done to all crews, who made us all extremely proud!
